Market / 4x4 Jeep Terminal / Academic Project
Caracas, Venezuela, 2012
Best Final Project Award — Unidad Docente Nueve, FAU-UCV, 2012
Honourable Mention — Salón Malaussena, 2016
Mercayip investigates the border between the spontaneous city and the planned city: the fragile strip where the mountain settlements of Caracas meet the avenues, infrastructures and formal urban fabric below.
The project proposes the fusion of two everyday public programmes: a market and a 4x4 jeep terminal. Although these uses appear independent, they are deeply connected through daily life. People buy food, wait, meet and move through the same space, transforming time, mobility and commerce into a shared urban ritual.
The building operates as a bridge between two realities historically divided by geography, infrastructure and social conditions. Its large V-shaped roof becomes a collective cover: a space of gathering, exchange and transition, opening simultaneously towards the neighbourhood and the planned city.
Mercayip proposes an architecture of connection — a public structure where market, movement and community meet under one roof.
